Classrooms

Carpet tile is the most common classroom flooring choice in Australian schools. It absorbs impact noise from chair movement and foot traffic, reduces sound reflection for better speech intelligibility and creates a comfortable, non-threatening atmosphere for students. Individual tiles can be replaced when damaged, which is a practical advantage in environments where spills and staining are inevitable.

Luxury vinyl plank is an increasingly popular alternative, particularly in classrooms where ease of cleaning takes priority over acoustic performance. LVP resists staining from markers, paint and food better than carpet and cleans with a simple damp mop. In these applications, acoustic underlay can help compensate for the reduced sound absorption.

School halls and multipurpose spaces

Halls and multipurpose rooms need flooring that handles assembly seating, sporting activities, performance events and dining functions — often within the same week. The flooring must resist scuffing from chairs and tables, handle the rolling loads of staging and equipment, and provide a safe surface for physical activity.

LVP and commercial vinyl sheet both perform well in these demanding multi-use environments. LVP provides a warmer aesthetic and easier section repair, while vinyl sheet offers a seamless surface that is particularly suited to dining and event functions.

Corridors and circulation

School corridors see some of the highest foot traffic densities in any commercial building. Between-class movement concentrates hundreds of students into narrow spaces multiple times per day. Vinyl sheet flooring handles this traffic volume while providing a seamless, easy-to-clean surface. LVP is a strong alternative where aesthetic warmth is valued.

Bathrooms and wet areas

Student bathrooms require waterproof, slip-resistant, hygienic flooring that withstands aggressive cleaning. Vinyl sheet with heat-welded seams and coved skirting is the standard specification for education wet areas, providing the same seamless hygiene performance used in healthcare environments.

STEM laboratories and workshops

Science labs, technology workshops and food technology rooms need flooring that resists chemical spills, heat exposure and impact damage. Vinyl sheet handles most laboratory environments, while epoxy flooring systems are specified for heavier-duty workshops where chemical exposure or mechanical damage is more significant.

Administration and staff areas

Office and administration spaces in education settings follow the same principles as commercial office flooring. Carpet tile provides acoustic comfort for staff rooms, offices and meeting spaces. LVP in reception areas creates a professional impression for visitors.

Childcare-specific requirements

Childcare centres operate under additional regulations that affect flooring choices:

Safety and fall protection — Flooring in areas used by children under five must consider fall impact. Products with cushioned backing or dedicated underlay can reduce injury severity from falls during play.

Hygiene — Young children spend more time on the floor than any other age group. The floor surface must be hygienic, easy to sanitise and free from substances that could harm children who crawl, sit and play at floor level.

Easy cleaning — Nappy changes, food spills, art supplies and outdoor play mean childcare floors are cleaned more frequently than any other education environment. Products must maintain their performance and appearance under intensive daily cleaning.

Warmth and comfort — Flooring in play areas and sleep rooms should feel warm and comfortable for children who spend extended time sitting and lying on the surface.

Luxury vinyl plank and vinyl sheet are the most common choices for childcare centres, offering the combination of hygiene, durability and comfort that this environment requires.

Acoustic performance in learning environments

Acoustic quality directly affects learning outcomes. The Australian standard AS/NZS 2107 provides recommended noise levels for education spaces, and flooring contributes to achieving these targets through:

• Impact sound reduction — Carpet tile provides the highest impact sound reduction of any commercial flooring product, typically 25-35 dB (delta Lw)
• Sound absorption — Carpet absorbs airborne sound, reducing reverberation and improving speech clarity in classrooms
• Noise from movement — LVP and vinyl sheet generate less noise under foot traffic than hard surfaces like ceramic tile or concrete

After-hours and holiday installation

Education flooring installation must work around the school calendar. We schedule installations during school holidays wherever possible, or execute after-hours work when holiday periods are not available. For multi-stage projects, we zone the installation to allow continued use of unaffected areas during the school term.

Proper floor preparation remains non-negotiable regardless of the scheduling constraints. We build preparation time into the programme to ensure substrates are correctly assessed, repaired and levelled before any finished flooring is installed.
